A DEPUTY SHERIFF IS ASSIGNED TO FIELD DUTY WHICH CONSISTS OF BOTH ROUTINE AND COMPLEX LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES.  GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE REPORTING AND DOCUMENTATION, PRESERVATION OF SAFETY, AND PEACE AND SECURITY.  THE EMPLOYEE NORMALLY WORKS INDEPENDENTLY WHICH NECESSITATES A HIGH DEGREE OF SELF-DISCIPLINE, INTEGRITY AND DECISION-MAKING ABILITY. IN ADDITION TO SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES NATURAL TO THE POLICE FUNCTIONS, THERE ARE SPECIALIZED POSITIONS REQUIRING OTHER SKILLS. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Has been employed within the last twelve months as a full-time law enforcement officer and have a minimum of 5 years continuous service in this capacity.

2. An exemplary work history.

3. Certified or certifiable by the State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board.

4. At least 21 years of age at the time of application. High School graduate.

5. Have sixty (60) college credits at the time of hire.

6. A valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.

7. No criminal record.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

1. Law Enforcement Represented Employees:

A. Lateral Entry Law Enforcement Officers meeting the above qualifications upon hire shall receive 90% of the regular rate of pay. Upon completion of the FTO program, as determined by the Sheriff or designee, Officers shall receive 100% of the regular rate of pay for the classification as outlined in Addendum "A" of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

B. Lateral Entry Law Enforcement Officers may be extended Vacation benefits which commensurate with their prior full-time sworn law enforcement experience up to 10 years of service as outlined in Article 5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

C. As of June 16, 2023, The Ashland County board approved the transfer of 400 hours of sick time from current employment agency.

D. No other contractual benefits or privileges are extended to recognize prior service. Lateral entry officers shall be subject to the probationary period.

E. The Lateral Entry Program compensation and benefits may be extended to current employees hired after January 1, 2013. However, the Association and current employees who are extended the Lateral Entry Program waive any claims for back wages or benefits as a result of this agreement.

2. Any employee who resigns or is terminated with less than one full year of service will not be eligible for compensation of enhanced earned vacation time benefit.

SALARY:

Starting: $28.92 PER HOUR

After 1 year: $32.13 PER HOUR

Description

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking a detail-oriented and trustworthy individual to fill the position of Open Records & Evidence/Property Custodian, responsible for providing general secretarial and administrative support to the Sheriff’s Office while serving as the primary administrative custodian for police evidence and property. This position plays a critical role in maintaining confidentiality, organizational efficiency, and legal compliance related to evidence handling, records management, and daily office operations.

 

This position also offers potential advancement opportunities, including training and assignment as a Crime Scene Evidence Technician, for the right candidate who demonstrates aptitude, reliability, and interest.

 

Examples of Duties

·      Receive and properly document, package, and store all evidence/property obtained by department personnel.

·      Properly inventory/dispose/release/transport all property/evidence received, including drugs for chemical testing, according to mandatory procedures.

·      Answer questions from the public on procedural aspects of evidence storage/disposal, and testify in court on storage and handling procedures.

·      Responsible for evidence keys, lockers, the evidence storage room and its contents, plus stocking the evidence intake room and maintaining the condition and packaging of evidence along with their location within the storage rooms.

·      Maintain accurate and legible records of items disposed/received/transferred by means of chain-of-custody.

·      Responds to citizen inquiries related to stored property and coordinates shipping and pick up of property.

·      Have evidence ready on time for Investigators / Officers for court.

·      The ability to follow procedures put in place from the State, DA’s Office, FBI, State Crime Lab, and standard practices as well as keep up on changes to those procedures.

·      Conducts evidence research, purge, and disposal of property as established by past practice/procedure, in accordance with State and Federal laws, and industry recognized guidelines.

·      Responsible for processing Open Records requests for the Sheriff’s Office to include: receiving, processing, redacting, logging, and responding to requests in a manner that is consistent with the Wisconsin Public Records Law (Wis. Stat. § 19.31 through Wis. Stat. § 19.39), and in accordance with the Records Maintenance and Release Policy.

·     Answer Sheriff's Office administrative phone and direct calls accordingly.

·     Update and maintain the accuracy of all records management data.

·     Maintain security and integrity of confidential records.

·     Review case reports and submit monthly data to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).

·     Notarize documents as necessary.

·     Serve as back-up to the Sheriff's Secretary during periods of absence including: paper services, case report preparation, payroll, weekly press releases, and respond to requests for sheriff's office information.

·     Other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:


·     High School Diploma or equivalent required.

·     Associate’s degree with emphasis on Business Management, Finance, or Accounting preferred.

·     High School Diploma or equivalent along with experience in administrative secretarial work or other related work experience will be considered.

·     Preference may be given for law enforcement support experience.

·     Eligible for TIME and Crime Information Bureau (CIB) system access

·     Ability to become a notary public.

 

Physical Requirements:

·      Standing, walking, sitting and stooping;

·      Kneeling crouching, balancing and bending/twisting.

·     Extensive use of computer monitors and keyboard entry

·     Lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, up to 50 pounds.

·       Ability to talk and hear sufficiently to communicate in person and using electronic devices such as a telephone and computer.

·      Ability to learn, stay up-to-date, and retain knowledge of law enforcement procedures, various legal papers and procedures, Wisconsin’s Open Records Law, guidelines and laws relating to evidence and the handling of evidence, and other government regulations/procedures.

·      Ability to learn and utilize Agency Reporting Management System (Spillman/Motorola Flex).

·      Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality and discretion regarding business-related files, reports, and conversations, within the provisions of open records laws and other applicable State and Federal statutes and regulations.

·      Ability to learn and retain County and Agency Policies and Procedures.

Hiring for Food Service Worker

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a part-time food service worker to perform kitchen related duties at the Ashland County Jail.  The starting wage is $19.11 / hour, and are expected to work 20 hrs per week.  Wage study has implemented increases.  Inmate's will not be working with employee's, unless otherwise approved.  

 

Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Must be able to perform tasks quickly and effectively.  Individuals with felony convictions will not be considered. A background check and drug test is mandatory.
